Six people lost their lives during a series of mass shootings across the United States over the Halloween weekend.
Dallas recorded the highest death toll, with four fatalities and 15 injuries in the Deep Ellum district. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux stated that investigators were still determining if three separate shootings, which occurred within a 75-minute window on Saturday night, were connected. He noted that several arrests were made, though he did not specify the number of suspects or the charges filed. The police department had increased its presence in the area prior to the incidents, and no officers were injured. Comeaux described the scene as large and spread out.
Violence also occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, following the Magic City Classic football game. Mayor Randall Woodfin reported that one person died and eight were wounded in two separate shootings near Legion Field. Two victims were listed in critical condition on Sunday. Nearly 70,000 fans attended the game, which Alabama A&M won 31-28. Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman said one person was detained and multiple weapons were found. The first shooting took place near vendors on Graymont Avenue, after most spectators had left the stadium.
In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot near the University of Delaware campus late Saturday. Lieutenant Greg D’Elia confirmed that all six victims were transported to hospitals. Main Street in Newark was closed for several hours following the incident. In Bloomington, Illinois, a 19-year-old woman died and another woman was left in critical condition in a shooting near Illinois Wesleyan University early Sunday. Six other people sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The city is located about 135 miles southwest of Chicago.
Fayetteville, Arkansas, reported six gunshot wounds to hospital patients from a shooting early Sunday near the University of Arkansas. Police stated that no arrests had been made and that a preliminary investigation suggests an altercation preceded the gunfire. On Friday, two separate attacks occurred at Spirit Halloween stores in California and Michigan. A 31-year-old pregnant woman was killed in a targeted shooting in Fairfield, California, where six others were wounded. In Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot, and a man assaulted by bystanders during his arrest was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
