One person died and eight others sustained injuries after a shooting erupted near a university football stadium in Alabama on Saturday. The incident occurred shortly after the conclusion of the Magic City Classic, a game played between Alabama A&M and Alabama State universities.
Police Chief Michael Pickett stated that the violence took place after the final whistle. He clarified to ABC News that the shooting did not happen inside the stadium itself. Instead, Pickett noted that the activity was largely concentrated outside the facility's main perimeter.
Officer Darrell Freeman provided specific details regarding the timeline. He reported that multiple gunshots were heard in the 400 block of West Grayman Avenue at approximately 7:50 p.m. First responders arrived at the scene to find several individuals who had been struck by bullets.
Freeman confirmed the medical status of the victims. He identified at least one fatality, one individual in critical condition, and seven others who remained in stable condition. The police secured the area and collected physical evidence from the site.
Authorities recovered multiple firearms from the location. Freeman explained that these weapons were transferred to the department's evidence storage. Investigators also made one arrest. A suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Birmingham police station for questioning. The case remains active as officers continue to gather information.
Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin addressed the community through social media. He described residents as hurt, shocked, and rightfully angry. Woodfin argued that no dispute or misunderstanding could justify this level of violence during a celebratory event. He pledged to ensure justice for those harmed during what he called one of the city's most valued events. Woodfin emphasized the family traditions associated with the game and urged the community to remain united during this time of mourning.
