A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire died in the Bahamas after a strong ocean current pulled her under while she attempted to reach her two sons.
Police stated that the family was snorkelling near the southern point of Bimini island on Tuesday when the tide shifted. The force reported that the current carried both boys away. The mother swam after them and was subsequently swept off course.
Rescuers recovered the two boys from the water. They were later brought to the North Bimini Ferry Dock, where the mother was also found. Officers from the Alice Town police station arrived shortly after 10 am following reports that she was unresponsive.
Paramedics administered CPR at the dock before transporting her to a local clinic. A doctor declared her dead upon arrival, despite efforts to revive her.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death.
The UK Foreign Office said officials are coordinating with local authorities. A spokesperson noted that the ministry is providing direct support to the family.
