A 23-year-old resident of Givatayim was taken into custody on Saturday night following a physical confrontation with a member of the security detail for former prime minister Naftali Bennett.
The incident occurred while Bennett addressed a crowd in Tel Aviv. The gathering was organized to demand the creation of a commission of inquiry into the failures that preceded the October 7 massacre.
According to reports, the suspect was under the influence of alcohol. He attempted to breach the security perimeter surrounding Bennett while shouting the slogan “Only Bibi,” a phrase expressing support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Guard instructions to keep the man at a distance were ignored. After one guard pushed him back, the suspect confronted the officer and shoved him in return. The security team subdued the man and held him at the location until police arrived.
Officers arrested the suspect and transported him to a police station for questioning. An initial review indicated the man has no prior criminal record. Investigators are currently examining the specific circumstances of the scuffle.
Bennett, who serves as chairman of the B’Yachad party, held the office of prime minister from June 2021 to June 2022. The event took place days before the 2026 Knesset elections, during which IDF soldiers had already cast ballots at military polling stations earlier in the week.
