Venezuelan voters and opposition supporters gained a new focal point for their demands on Sunday when Maria Corina Machado appeared in Lara State. She stepped into a local church after spending nearly a year outside the country, marking her first public appearance on Venezuelan soil since December.

Machado confirmed her arrival via social media, writing, "I am here. With you." Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, a fellow opposition leader, verified the news and said he plans to rejoin her in Venezuela soon. The gathering inside the church included citizens who greeted the Nobel laureate with applause and physical embraces.

The opposition figure had been in exile for roughly 11 months. She went into hiding after a brief detention during anti-government protests. While abroad, she campaigned for a democratic transition and was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. Previous attempts to cross the border were blocked by denied landing permissions in neighboring Caribbean territories.

The political situation in Caracas shifted dramatically during her absence. Former President Nicolas Maduro was removed by U.S. military forces in January and transported to New York for federal drug trials. Delcy Rodriguez, a senior official in the ruling party, became interim president with U.S. support. The interim administration has now exceeded its original timeframe without setting a specific date for national presidential elections.

Machado and her coalition continue to pressure the government to fix an electoral timeline. The opposition demands a rapid return to the polls, safe passage for exiles, and the release of political prisoners. U.S. diplomats, however, have prioritized economic stabilization before holding a vote.

President Donald Trump spoke to reporters on Sunday regarding the development. He stated he was unaware of the specific details of her return but expressed hope for her safety. Machado’s presence is intended to revitalize the domestic opposition, which is organizing rallies to demand a definitive end to interim rule.
