The US is actively promoting Viktor Orbán for the position of UN secretary-general, hoping to secure Russian and Chinese support. This move is part of a strategy to counterbalance the influence of the European Union and align with leaders who share a conservative ideology.

The Trump administration suggested to Orbán that he participate in the race for the UN post, and a State Department official confirmed that the US supported his decision to run.

Although one official called the idea 'crazy' at first glance, the plan is for Orbán to become the joint candidate of Russia and China, which are believed to support him based on previous talks with Washington.

The US and another country’s officials noted that when the US, Russia, and China agree on a goal in the UN Security Council, they generally achieve it.

A State Department representative said that eight votes in the Security Council would support Orbán comfortably, and another 10 could potentially be secured, giving him a strong chance of winning.

One American official stated that Orbán is 'the dream MAGA-conservative candidate' because of his actions against mass migration, liberal NGOs, and left-leaning courts and the press.

The WSJ also noted that Orbán’s pro-China orientation did not undermine his image as a defender of Western civilisation.

The announcement of Orbán’s candidacy is being held back until after the US midterm elections, as the US and another country’s officials contacted him to gauge his interest in the UN post and found that he was positively inclined, albeit with caveats.

A State Department representative agreed that Orbán adheres to the correct ideology, knows how to exercise power under hostile conditions, and will not be intimidated by the establishment.
