A car fired on a crowd outside a boxing venue in Loganholme, a suburb south of Brisbane, Australia, wounding four people on Saturday. Queensland police dispatched officers to the licensed premises on Bryants Road at 8:15 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire from a vehicle. The vehicle involved was seen leaving the scene, and the four injured individuals were transported to a hospital for assessment.
The venue, Fitzys Loganholme, was hosting the Logan City Titles Fight Night. Deputy Commander Chris Stream of the Queensland Police Force described the scene as confronting. He stated that several people sustained gunshot wounds. Police confirmed that the suspects remain at large but do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. Officers have urged anyone with information to contact them.
Jon Raven, the mayor of Logan City, told the Today show that residents in the area are frightened. He characterized the event as a shockwave for the local community, noting that residents had not previously experienced such an incident. Raven said his thoughts were with the victims, staff, and attendees. He recalled attending similar events in the past and described them as family-friendly environments where many children were present.
Raven stated that the experience will impact the attendees for the rest of their lives. He explained that the night was organized to help steer children away from violence. The organizer uses boxing to empower young people and help them reconnect with the community. Raven said the organizer would be devastated because the incident contradicted the goal of the event. He added that the organizer loves boxing and views it as a tool for empowerment.
On Sunday morning, the Logan City Titles organization posted a statement on social media. The group expressed that they were heartbroken about the incident. They described the event as a community gathering meant to showcase local talent and hard work. The statement asserted that such incidents have no place in the boxing community or the wider public. The organizers emphasized the skills and dedication of the fighters inside the ring.
Police continue to investigate the shooting. The four injured people are currently in hospital. Their conditions are being assessed by medical staff. No arrests have been made. The vehicle used in the drive-by was last seen leaving the area on Bryants Road. Police are reviewing the scene for evidence. They are also speaking with witnesses who were present at the venue at the time of the shooting.
