Anthropic is on track for a public listing later this year, with expectations that the valuation could reach as high as $2 trillion. This upcoming event is set to deliver a significant financial windfall for the company's investors, ranging from those who backed the startup in its earliest days to the larger funds that joined more recently. Even before the IPO, the stakes held by many of these venture capitalists and early backers are already worth billions of dollars. According to data from Bloomberg, the current private market valuation of $965 billion places a considerable amount of wealth in the hands of the firm's supporters.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, is one of the most prominent early beneficiaries of this growth. He invested in the company's Series A round back in 2021, a period when the startup was valued at just $461 million according to PitchBook. Today, Schmidt holds approximately one percent of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion, marking a substantial increase from his initial entry point.
Iconiq represents the other end of the spectrum, having made a massive late-stage bet on Anthropic. The investment firm wrote a check for $6 billion last year, at a time when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That single investment has grown to a value of $17 billion. With the anticipated IPO, Iconiq’s position has the potential to double again, further cementing its status as a major beneficiary of the AI boom.
Menlo Ventures has been a consistent supporter of the AI lab, leading the company's Series D funding round. Over time, the venture capital firm has invested more than $1 billion in Anthropic. This sustained commitment has resulted in a stake that is now valued at $14 billion, reflecting the company's rapid appreciation in value since Menlo first began investing.
Sequoia, a well-known venture capital firm, entered the picture later in the company's history. They backed the AI lab for the first time earlier this year, when the valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. By investing $3 billion, Sequoia secured about one percent ownership in the company. This move has already resulted in the firm more than doubling its initial investment, showcasing the high returns available even to late-stage entrants.
Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen significant gains. The group initially invested $35 million in Anthropic's 2023 Series C round. Since then, they have funneled an additional $400 million into the company. These combined investments have created a stake that is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch his own new venture capital firm.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to have a board seat at Anthropic. They invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, which was conducted when the company was valued at $5 billion. That specific position has ballooned more than ninetyfold, growing to a value of $7 billion. This trajectory highlights the extraordinary returns available to investors who entered during that particular funding phase.
The collective value of these individual stakes illustrates the massive potential for profit in the upcoming public offering. As Anthropic prepares for its listing, these figures suggest that the financial rewards for its backers will be substantial, regardless of when they first made their investments. The market's anticipation of a $2 trillion valuation further amplifies the expected gains for these key players in the artificial intelligence sector.
