AI Funding: OpenAI Seeks $30 Billion at $1.25 Trillion
The ChatGPT developer is nearing a massive private financing round that would set a new record for private company valuations.

OpenAI is reportedly in advanced talks to secure a new round of private capital that could reach $30 billion. The company is aiming for a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, which would significantly exceed previous private market benchmarks. This development suggests the artificial intelligence leader may delay its public market debut in favor of another large-scale private financing event.
According to sources cited by CNBC, the new round is being led by the investment firm Coatue alongside investors from the United Arab Emirates. This follows a similar report from Bloomberg published last month, which indicated that the AI lab was working on raising the same amount of capital at a slightly higher $1.4 trillion valuation. Since terms are still under negotiation, the final figures for both the raise size and the valuation remain subject to change.
The involvement of UAE-based investors may extend beyond simple equity investment. CNBC reports that the funding could be paired with a separate agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from the region. This strategic element highlights the growing importance of infrastructure partnerships in supporting the rapid expansion of large language models.
If the negotiation concludes with a valuation exceeding $1 trillion, OpenAI would become the most valuable private company in history. This achievement would raise the expectations for the company’s upcoming initial public offering. OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, following a previous funding round in March that valued the ChatGPT maker at $852 billion on a post-money basis.
The high bar set by OpenAI could also influence the trajectory of its primary competitor, Anthropic. Many industry observers believe that Anthropic is closer to launching its own public offering. Rumors suggest that the company’s public S-1 filing could be released at any time.
CNBC notes that Anthropic is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its public debut. In May, the company raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, a move that many viewed as its final major private round before going public. Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, mirroring the timeline of its rival.
OpenAI declined to comment on the current financing efforts. The outcome of these negotiations will determine whether the AI giant remains private at a record-breaking valuation or proceeds with its planned public listing at a potentially adjusted price point.
