Anthropic Targets Professionals With New Agent
The new application focuses on workflow automation and data analysis rather than simple personal errands.

Anthropic has officially entered the crowded market of artificial intelligence agents with the release of Claude Duet. The company is positioning this new tool not as a general purpose chatbot, but as a specialized assistant designed for professionals and small businesses. By launching now, Anthropic joins a growing list of competitors including Meta, OpenAI, and several emerging startups that are all vying for user attention in the productivity sector. The move signals a clear strategic pivot toward enterprise oriented solutions within the broader AI landscape.
A key distinction of the new product is its focus on workflow management rather than personal errands. The company explicitly stated that Duet is not intended to handle casual tasks like booking travel tickets or managing household chores. This approach differentiates it from personal agents such as Instinct, which prioritize lifestyle convenience. Furthermore, Duet does not offer a live view of its browser activity, meaning users cannot watch the agent navigate websites in real time as it works. This design choice suggests a preference for background processing over interactive observation.
The application is built to monitor ongoing tasks and deliver proactive recommendations to users. It can construct daily briefings and create custom dashboards based on the specific data available to the user. Like other modern agents, Duet operates within its own virtual machine, allowing it to complete complex tasks in the background while the user continues with other activities. It will only interrupt the user when a decision or approval is required, ensuring that the workflow remains uninterrupted unless necessary.
The timing of this launch coincides with a broader industry shift from simple AI assistants to autonomous agents. Many of Anthropic's competitors are increasingly focusing on business use cases to drive adoption. For example, while Meta's Muse is primarily a personal assistant, the company has also released a version tailored for small businesses that integrates with other applications. Similarly, OpenAI's Dots has a strong business orientation, featuring deep integration with professional tools. Anthropic is clearly following this trend by targeting the small business segment with specific capabilities.
Duet is powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model, which provides the computational backbone for its operations. To enhance its utility, the agent can connect to more than 6,000 different connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive ecosystem allows the tool to interact with a wide variety of third party services. Additionally, the agent has the capability to make online purchases on behalf of users. It utilizes Stripe's Link digital wallet or Shopify's Shop Pay to facilitate these transactions, adding a layer of financial autonomy to its feature set.
Security and user control remain central to the product's design. Anthropic noted that sensitive actions, particularly those involving payments, will always require explicit user approval. However, the agent is restricted in its financial powers and will not trade securities or transfer money between different bank accounts. This limitation helps prevent potential financial errors or unauthorized movements of funds, providing a safety net for users who may be new to autonomous financial actions.
To address privacy concerns, the company introduced a new classifier system that reviews every message processed by the agent. This mechanism is designed to prevent sensitive information from leaking into the broader system or being exposed unnecessarily. By default, the agent will automatically decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification details. This proactive approach to data handling aims to build trust with users who may be hesitant to share personal or financial data with an autonomous tool.
Claude Duet is currently available in a research preview for Pro and Max customers. Users can access the application through iOS and Android devices, as well as via the web interface on Claude.ai. Due to the high demand and the preview status of the product, prospective users must join a waitlist to gain access. This phased rollout allows Anthropic to gather feedback and refine the agent's performance before a wider general availability launch. The competitive landscape suggests that the next few months will be critical for establishing market share in this rapidly evolving sector.
