Ukraine Prepares to Fight Without Starlink
Recent service disruptions and political maneuvering have forced Ukraine and its allies to plan for a future without the satellite network.

Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network has been a pillar of Ukraine’s defense for years. That pillar is now shaking. Service in Ukraine has become unreliable. The network has faced recent, unexpected outages. This has forced a difficult question: How does Ukraine fight without it?
Starlink is the world’s largest satellite communications network. It provides high-speed internet to users with a small, portable terminal. For Ukraine, this has been a lifeline. The system supports both civilian communications and military operations. It also gives Ukrainian forces the ability to remotely guide drones. These drones are used for air defense and for striking Russian targets. A representative from the Ukrainian defense company BlueBird Tech, speaking anonymously, said Starlink currently offers some of the best satellite coverage available, with virtually no competitors when you consider the combination of cost, availability, and ease of use.
The funding for this network has come from abroad. The US government and European nations like Poland and Germany have paid SpaceX for tens of thousands of terminals. They have also covered the subscription fees for the service. The US government has provided Ukraine’s military with access to a military-grade version of Starlink, known as Starshield. The BlueBird Tech representative noted that Ukrainian defense companies can also test this technology with the military.
For years, Starlink has been a critical enabler of Ukraine’s resistance to the full-scale invasion. Its role in guiding drones is a key part of that. The ability to control these systems remotely has been a significant advantage. The service has been central to both defending against and attacking Russian forces.
The network's reliability, however, has become a growing concern. Recent disruptions have raised alarms in Kyiv and across Europe. The service has become increasingly unreliable due to Musk’s political inclinations. This combination of technical problems and political influence has created a new urgency. Ukraine and its allies are now confronting the prospect of moving forward without the network.
The focus is now on finding alternatives. The current situation is unstable. The loss of a reliable communications tool would be a major blow. The ability to guide drones and maintain secure communications could be compromised. This is a risk Ukraine and Europe are now working to address.
The path forward is unclear. The future of Starlink’s service in Ukraine remains uncertain. The immediate future hinges on resolving the current issues. In the long term, Ukraine and Europe must develop new capabilities. They are seeking ways to maintain communications and drone operations without depending on Starlink. The plan is to build a more resilient and independent system.
