2018: When Meghan Was Told of Her Father's Digital Past

The Duchess of Sussex reveals that police shared disturbing allegations about her father with her eight years ago, just weeks after her royal wedding.

The royal family is once again facing a complex legal and personal crisis involving the father of the Duchess of Sussex. Meghan has publicly addressed new claims that her estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr, possessed images of child sexual abuse. This revelation adds a significant new chapter to a long-running family dispute.

The core of the new information is a timeline that stretches back to 2018. Meghan stated that the Metropolitan Police, specifically its Royalty and Specialist Protection unit, shared a letter with her containing these allegations. This letter arrived shortly after her wedding to Prince Harry. Sources indicate that she could not speak out at the time to avoid jeopardizing potential future investigations or facing legal action. The police force is now conducting internal inquiries to confirm if officers were involved in passing that letter along.

The current allegations stem from reports by the Sun newspaper. Her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, 60, told detectives in the Philippines that he found hundreds or even thousands of such images on computers and phones. He claimed these devices were stored in four boxes at his father's former home in Cebu. The devices had been left behind when Markle Sr returned to the United States in May following a stroke. The FBI has said it will support Philippine authorities in investigating any federal violations of US law.

Thomas Markle Sr is currently in a rehabilitation center in Florida, where he is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after a leg amputation. He described the claims as "shocked" and "hurt" news. He told the Daily Mail that he could never do what he is accused of. He noted that he had not possessed the computers since leaving Mexico for the Philippines in January 2025. He has denied the claims, calling them "sick lies." His half-sister, Samantha Markle, also defended him, suggesting the claims were a financial tactic by her brother.

In her official statement, Meghan described herself as deeply distressed by the situation. She explained that her decision to limit contact with her father was driven by a desire to protect her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. She expressed hope that justice will be served and that the safety of children remains the primary focus. The Met has not previously investigated Markle Sr and is not doing so now, but it is confirming the history of that 2018 letter.

Philippine officials have confirmed that the matter is under active investigation. A taskforce in Cebu is handling the case, and national police have secured Markle Sr's computer for a digital forensic examination. Interior secretary Jonvic Remulla expects the results of this analysis within one week. This ongoing probe highlights the international nature of the case, involving law enforcement in both the Philippines and the United States.

The stakes in this story are high for both the family and the broader public. For Meghan, it confirms her private suspicions about her father's conduct. For the public, it raises questions about how such allegations are handled when they involve members of the British royal family. The outcome of the forensic examination will likely determine the next steps in both local and international legal proceedings.
