US President Donald Trump ordered the Justice Department on Saturday to examine Democratic lawmakers for what he described as threatening many individuals. In a social media post, the President characterized these actions as a criminal act, although he did not provide specific evidence to support the claim. The directive comes shortly after Democratic candidates defeated Trump’s Republican Party in the midterm elections held on Tuesday, securing control of Congress starting in January.
Following their electoral victory, Democratic party leaders have pledged to reassert congressional oversight of the executive branch. They plan to achieve this by holding hearings and conducting investigations into the actions of the Trump administration. Trump’s latest post accused Democrats of sending threatening letters to many innocent people, a move he believes is part of a broader strategy to intimidate administration figures.
Several members of Congress have publicly released copies of letters seeking documents from various parties. These requests focus on specific matters, including donations from tech companies for the large ballroom that Trump is constructing at the White House. The President’s post also highlighted the case of Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, who recently suggested that Congress should investigate individuals who have enabled the administration's policies.
Slotkin made these remarks at the University of Chicago last month. She explained that she wants young people leaving school to consider whether working for the Trump administration is worth the potential risks. She stated that she wants them to think that participating might bring them many unwanted problems, thereby sending a message of deterrence. Her comments, made within weeks of the midterm elections, drew sharp criticism from Republicans.
Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah took to social media to argue that Slotkin was threatening young people who aspire to enter politics. Slotkin responded by stating that Lee had lied about her comments and asked him to spare the public from what she called manufactured outrage. This exchange adds to the growing tension between the incoming Democratic congressional leadership and the current administration.
The Justice Department has a history of investigating Senator Slotkin. A former CIA analyst, she was part of a group of Democratic lawmakers with national security backgrounds who were probed by the department. The investigation followed a video in which these lawmakers urged service members and intelligence officials to disobey illegal orders from the administration. A grand jury ultimately rejected the attempt to indict them.
As of Saturday, spokespeople for both the Justice Department and Senator Slotkin did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the new probe. The development marks a significant step in the political conflict that has emerged since the change in congressional control, with the executive branch now facing increased scrutiny and potential legal challenges from the legislative branch.
The order to investigate comes at a time when the political landscape in Washington is shifting rapidly. With Democrats set to take the helm in January, the relationship between the White House and Congress is expected to become more adversarial. The Justice Department’s role in this dynamic will be closely watched by both parties as they prepare for the new session of Congress.
