US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he is offering the position of White House press secretary to Dana White, the prominent executive behind the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The President made the proposal in a post on his Truth Social account, describing White as a great fighter and warrior. Trump explicitly urged the executive to accept the role, writing, 'Dana, please take the job!'
Although White has not formally accepted the appointment, he signaled a positive response by sharing a photograph on his own social media channels. The image, which may be artificially generated, depicts White standing behind the podium in the White House press briefing room. He captioned the post with the phrase, 'On to the next chapter,' suggesting his willingness to move forward with the new responsibility.
The White House has been without a press secretary since October 16. The vacancy was created after Katie Zacharia departed the position following a tenure of less than one week. This latest offer marks the most recent attempt to fill a key communications role in the administration.
White, who is 57 years old, serves as the president and CEO of the UFC. The organization is the largest and most successful entity in the world of mixed martial arts, broadcasting its cage fights to audiences across the globe. Trump has frequently attempted to align his political brand with the popularity of the UFC, a connection that has become increasingly visible in recent months.
In addition to the press secretary role, Trump requested that six current or former UFC titleholders join White in the administration. The list of proposed additions includes American athletes Justin Gaethje and Daniel Cormier, as well as Amanda Nunes, a Brazilian native who became an American citizen last year. The President also named two fighters from the Dagestan region of Russia, Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov. He also mentioned Kayla Harris, a reference likely pointing to the American athlete Kayla Harrison.
Trump justified the inclusion of these athletes by stating, 'We need these people to defend us against the Lunatic Left.' The White House amplified the announcement by publishing a screenshot of the President's post on one of its official social media accounts, further cementing the public nature of the proposal.
The relationship between Trump and White has been characterized by a close friendship and mutual political support. Since winning his second term in the 2024 election, White has appeared alongside the President at various high-profile events. This includes a victory speech and several UFC bouts held in cities such as Miami, New York, and New Jersey.
The political alignment was particularly evident in June, when the UFC hosted a major cage match on the South Lawn of the White House to mark the President's 80th birthday. The event drew significant attention and highlighted the integration of sports entertainment into the administration's public image.
White has also been involved in the broader business landscape associated with the administration. Since Trump's reelection, the UFC chief joined the board of directors at Meta. This appointment was widely interpreted by observers as an indication of the technology company's shift toward a more conservative stance.
The offer to White represents a significant departure from traditional press secretary candidates, bringing a figure from the sports and entertainment world into the heart of government communications. Whether White accepts the role will determine the next chapter in the administration's public messaging strategy.
