For 124 years, Barcelona and Real Madrid have been locked at 106 wins each in their head-to-head record. Sunday's match at Camp Nou will be the first to break that tie. The winner will hold the all-time advantage in a rivalry that dates back to 1902.
The fixture, known as El Clasico, has featured some of football's most famous players. Past editions included Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Neymar Jr, Luis Suarez, David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. Current squads have shifted the focus to Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona, and Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr for Real.
The all-time record is not the only factor that makes this rivalry compelling. Winning brings bragging rights that extend beyond the pitch. The two clubs have often finished seasons with identical points, but the head-to-head result can decide the league title.
One of the most memorable matches was a 3-2 Barcelona win at the Santiago Bernabeu on April 23, 2017. Casemiro put Real ahead, but Messi equalised within five minutes. Ivan Rakitic gave Barcelona the lead after the break, and Sergio Ramos was sent off for a lunge on Messi. James Rodriguez levelled in the 85th minute, but Messi scored in the final kick for his 500th goal for Barcelona.
Another classic was a 3-3 draw at Camp Nou on March 10, 2007. A 19-year-old Messi scored the first hat-trick of his career to rescue a point for a Barcelona side that was down to 10 men. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real, and Ramos added a third, but Messi equalised in stoppage time.
Real Madrid also had a dominant period. On April 10, 2005, they beat Barcelona 4-2 at home in a match that showcased their Galacticos era. Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario and Raul scored for Real, while Michael Owen netted the winner. Barcelona had earlier beaten Real 6-2 at the Bernabeu on May 2, 2009, with goals from Thierry Henry, Messi, Puyol and Pique.
The rivalry also includes cup finals. Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011, with a 1-0 extra-time goal from Cristiano Ronaldo. The goal secured their first trophy under Jose Mourinho and their first domestic cup since 1993.
