Gary Cortese received a commemorative plaque from the City of Byron on Saturday, October 24, marking 30 years of service in the community.
Mayor John Rickard presented the award to Cortese during a gathering at the Byron Forest Preserve. The ceremony recognized his tenure as the pastor of Beacon Hill Assembly of God Church, located at 6467 N. German Church Road in Byron.
Cortese has served the congregation in Ogle County for three decades. His role extends beyond the church, as he acts as a chaplain for the Byron Fire Department, the Byron Police Department, and the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office.
In these capacities, he provides guidance to church members and first responders. He supports individuals and families during celebrations, hardships, and crises. His wife, Valarie Cortese, participated in the celebration of his ministry.
A news release described the event as a recognition of the couple's long-term commitment to the area. The statement noted that their work has been a key part of their ministry for the past 30 years.
The service area covers Byron and the surrounding Ogle County region. Cortese’s dual role connects the religious and emergency response sectors in the local community.
