Seoul’s economy in the Netflix series Dead-End Job is a hostile environment where workers risk their lives for cash. Lee Jae-wook, known for Alchemy of Souls, plays Byeon Hyeok-jun, a thirty-year-old man trapped in debt and poverty. The eight-episode fantasy horror follows his struggle against a mysterious recruiter who offers wages fifty to two hundred times the minimum wage.

Hyeok-jun accepts shifts from Spider Staffing Agency because the pay is too good to refuse, even as the jobs prove deadly. He works alongside his younger sister, Ji-yoon, and a woman named Yeon-joo who claims to investigate the agency. The group discovers that the agency operates where the barrier between the human world and the supernatural realm is weakest.

The agency’s manager, Mr. S, explains that desperate workers emit strong yang energy during labor. Spider Staffing sends these employees to border sites as sacrifices to maintain the separation between the human and supernatural worlds. Hyeok-jun possesses a rare ability to survive these tasks, though he watches many colleagues die in the process.

Yeon-joo reveals a hidden past in the penultimate episode. She is a monster who was once a factory worker in South Korea forty years ago. After co-workers shoved her into a locker to protect her from violent police, she emerged in the present day near an amusement park. Her character symbolizes the real historical struggles of female laborers, referencing the 1970 self-immolation of activist Jeon Tae-il and the 1979 YH Union protests.

Hyeok-jun is lured back into the agency by Yeon-joo, who promises him a way to find his missing father. She directs him to a door inside NeoCity Amusement Park that leads to the other world. Mr. S warns Hyeok-jun that opening the door will release monsters and trigger an apocalypse. Hyeok-jun chooses to open the door anyway, distrusting Mr. S after seeing him shoot Yeon-joo.

As the door opens, Hyeok-jun sees his father, who has been transformed by the other side and clutches a small amount of money. Ji-yoon pulls her brother from the threshold and helps close the door. This action halts the influx of supernatural entities, preventing the immediate end of the world. News reports later mention unexplained fires and remains, suggesting the damage is not fully contained.

In the series' final scene, Hyeok-jun returns to the agency's office. He receives a text from Spider Staffing offering him a position as Mr. S's replacement. A pre-recorded voice message from Mr. S questions whether Hyeok-jun will make different decisions in the role. Hyeok-jun opens his mouth to respond, but the credits roll before his answer is heard. A mid-credits scene shows Ji-yoon receiving a recruitment text from Kyung-il Group, a company that owned both Yeon-joo's factory and the amusement park.

The series leaves the possibility of a second season open to viewers. A continuation depends on the first season's performance on Netflix. If approved, production will face a delay because Lee Jae-wook is currently serving his mandatory military service. He is expected to be discharged in November 2027, which sets the earliest timeline for filming the next season.
