The United States is dispatching a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East, a move that signals an escalation in military preparations as regional conflicts intensify. This deployment accompanies a broader shift in force posture, with some U.S. personnel exiting the region while heavier assets arrive. Officials indicate that more intense fighting involving Iran may resume in the coming weeks.
A person briefed on U.S. and Israeli war planning told NPR that both nations are preparing for a potential attack on Iran following the American midterm elections. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently traveled to Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to coordinate these efforts. President Donald Trump is expected to evaluate military options after November 3, aiming to prevent oil price spikes before voters reach the polls. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran is prepared for both diplomacy and war, demanding formal control of the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
In the United States, early voting has surged well before Election Day. According to the University of Florida's Election Lab, nearly 21 million Americans have already cast ballots by mail or in person. This total increased by approximately 2 million in a single day. Early voting rates in key battleground states are higher than during the previous midterm cycle. Democrats are voting early at higher rates than Republicans, while unaffiliated voters are also participating. In California, a federal judge is restricting pre-election field operations by the Department of Homeland Security, which aims to identify noncitizens who allegedly voted illegally in nine states.
Legal and economic developments continue to shape the domestic backdrop. A federal magistrate judge ruled that President Trump must sit for a deposition in his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC. The case centers on a Panorama broadcast from late October 2024 that allegedly edited his January 6 speech. Trump has previously canceled a deposition citing national importance. Meanwhile, grocery prices remain a focal point for voters. Ground beef reached $6.79 per pound last month, an 85% increase over the last decade. Eggs fell to $2.27 per dozen after peaking at $6.23 in March 2025, and butter averaged $3.96 in September, down 17.3% from the previous year. Coffee prices remain 44% higher than two years ago despite tariff removals.
The next major scheduled event is the November 3 midterm election, which will determine the composition of the U.S. Congress. Following the vote, President Trump is likely to make a final decision on military action against Iran. The U.S. and Israel currently possess the capacity to inflict heavy damage on Iran, though Tehran shows no sign of making major concessions. The outcome of the election may influence the timing and scale of any post-vote conflict.
