Two people have died following a serious traffic accident in eastern France involving a bus carrying passengers through the Ain region. French authorities announced on Friday that the fatalities included one child and one young adult. The incident occurred near the small town of Lent, which is situated in a rural area north-east of Lyon.
The prefecture of Ain provided details on the scale of the emergency response, stating that 16 additional individuals sustained injuries. Among those hurt, three are in serious condition. Officials described the event as an accident involving an intercity bus, though local leadership suggested a school bus was the vehicle involved in the collision.
Emergency services mobilized a significant force to manage the scene. The prefecture reported that 102 firefighters were deployed to the location. Air support included four aircraft, while eight ground-based emergency medical teams were also dispatched to assist the victims.
Yves Cristin, the mayor of Lent, arrived at the site shortly after the crash. He described the immediate aftermath to BFM TV, noting that those present were in a state of shock. Mr. Cristin observed that one side of the vehicle had been torn off, indicating that passengers seated on that side likely suffered the most severe injuries.
The local community has begun to support the affected individuals. The town opened its community hall to serve as a shelter and care center for the victims and their families. This gathering place provides a space for recovery and coordination in the hours following the tragedy.
French media outlets reported that the passengers included children who were traveling to middle and high schools in the surrounding area. Visual evidence from the scene showed that the bus had left the roadway and come to rest in a ditch. The specific mix of passengers has drawn attention from national leaders regarding the impact on the student population.
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot took to the social media platform X to announce that he was traveling to the site. He characterized the event as a serious bus accident and indicated his intention to oversee the situation directly. His presence underscores the government's immediate response to the incident.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu also issued a statement on X, expressing condolences to the families of the victims. He referred to the event as a tragic accident and highlighted the loss of two children. The Prime Minister thanked the firefighters, medical teams, and law enforcement officers for their rapid mobilization and aid.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray commented on the crash while visiting a high school in the Paris region. He noted the difficulty of such moments for the education community. The Minister conveyed that the thoughts of the government and the entire sector were with the families affected by the loss.
The accident has placed a spotlight on road safety in the region, particularly regarding vehicles transporting students. As investigations continue, the focus remains on the recovery of the injured and the support of the local community in Lent during this difficult time.
