A high school football matchup in central Florida will take place on Friday evening, October 23, despite a week of intense security planning. The contest between Harmony High School and St. Cloud High School remains on the schedule, but it will feature a significantly larger law enforcement presence. This decision came after local officials concluded that recent warnings about a potential shooting were unfounded.
The investigation began when the Osceola County Sheriff's Office received a tip on Thursday night. The report suggested that gunfire might break out at the upcoming game. By Friday morning, the situation escalated as text messages containing the same threat began spreading among students. Deputies reviewed both the initial tip and the subsequent digital communications. They found no evidence to support either claim, leading them to classify the warnings as false.
To ensure safety during the event, the sheriff's office has arranged for additional support at the stadium. This includes K-9 units and mounted patrol officers who will patrol the grounds. Personnel from the St. Cloud Police Department will also be stationed on site. These extra resources are designed to reassure fans and players while confirming that the game will proceed as planned.
Investigators also looked into the motive behind the rumors. The person who spread the false threats claimed that the injured teenager from a recent assault was responsible for the warnings. Officials examined this specific allegation and also found it to be inaccurate. As of Friday, the originator of the threats had not been identified. It remains unclear if the person has any connection to the student who was attacked earlier in the week.
The background for this heightened security traces back to an incident on October 16. That day, a group of students allegedly assaulted a 17-year-old near the school. The victim was transported to a hospital where doctors closed his wounds with 11 stitches. Authorities linked the violence to a dispute that started during the lunch period just hours before the beating.
According to the sheriff's office, the conflict began when the teenager intervened in a cafeteria. A group of students was throwing carrots at another girl. The 17-year-old stepped in to help, which reportedly triggered the subsequent physical attack. On October 21, police arrested nine students in connection with the incident. Their ages range from 14 to 18. They face charges of felony aggravated battery and felony inciting a riot.
The sequence of events has created a complex narrative for the local community. A minor cafeteria disagreement escalated into a physical fight. That fight led to arrests, which then fueled rumors about a new threat at the next social event. The law enforcement response has focused on verifying these rumors while maintaining a visible but manageable security footprint.
Captain Kim Montes of the sheriff's office emphasized the seriousness of reporting false emergencies. She stated that false reports of a shooting are not tolerated. Montes added that if the suspect is identified, they will be charged. As of Friday, the source of the threats remains unknown, but the community is preparing for a quiet and orderly evening of football.
